Da Nang: Exploiting tourism potential of the luxury cruiser

The 5 -star tourist cruise ships landing at Tien Sa port continuously from the beginning of this year has brought many new opportunities, a promising “bumper" for Da Nang tourism. However, renewing the tourist products to exploit effectively expenditures from the “VIP” tourists is still limited.

In 2014, the city's tourism industry is expected to welcome over 100 ships landing in Da Nang, up 2.5 times compared with last year. Only in the New Year Festival, the average number of ships welcomed daily was about 1 cruiser with more than 1,500 international tourists. With the location on the heritage path of the Central, connecting many famous sightseeing such as My Son Sanctuary, Hoi An ancient town, Hue Imperial City, Da Nang has become an indispensable stationary place of 5 star cruise ships.
 
As the largest cruise ship operating in the Central, in the first months of this year, Saigontourist has welcomed dozen of ships to visit the beautiful city by the Han River by the Han River in the sea route for exploring Vietnam sea. Even in peak season, from January to March, almost every week Saigontourist welcome from 4-5 ships with an average number of visitors from 1,000-1,500 visitors per ship.
 
Many familiar names like Henna , SuperStar Gemini , Costa Victoria ... almost visits Da Nang weekly which contributes to the cruise ship market more exciting.
 
According to Mr Huynh Minh Hoang, Chief Executive of ship navigation, Saigontourist branch in Da Nang: " The cruise ship market this year brings much prosperity to Da Nang tourism with the number of tourists and the number of voyages increased significantly. Besides, the increasing number of new voyages bring senior tourists to Da Nang proved that the tourism image of the city by the Han River becomes popular with tourists and in favor of choosing on the schedule to the Central”.
 
However, the lack of specific local tourism products makes cruise tourists not interested in spending money on entertainment activities and shopping.
 
According to many travel agents, in order to prepare a voyage with about 1500-1700 visitors, they have to design around 20 tours for tourists to choose. However, in approximately 20 designed tours, there are only a few tours to Da Nang with about 300-500 guests, the majority of visitors left choose to Hoi An , Hue and My Son Sanctuary.
 
The key reason is due to the "poor" tourism products, there is only pedicab, watching opera, visiting the Cham Sculpture Museum, shopping in the Han market and Big C, while most of the attractive tours are in Hue, Quang Nam. According to the statistics of travel agencies specialized in cruise tourism in Da Nang, cruise tourists can spend an average only 30-50 USD per day in Da Nang, too low as compared with general standard of other destinations.
 
The local souvenirs have no diversity in kinds and richness in forms, on the other hand the souvenir shops are small, not enough space for hundreds of visitors and placed dispersedly. It is really not inconvenient for shoppers.
 
"Cruise tourists are the one who can aggressively spend money on shopping and entertainment activities; however in Da Nang , they do not know where to spend money ., a travel agency representative said
 
So despite of being regarded as the most worth living city in Vietnam, Da Nang is only acting as "transshipment terminal”, where the voyage to landing, not to be an attractive place for tourists to spend money
